Black River Gorges
The Black River Gorges National Park was proclaimed in 1994 under Section 11 of the Wildlife and National Parks Act of 1993 and became the first National Park in Mauritius. Black River Gorges National Park falls under the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Protected Area Category II, which includes National Parks. Black River Gorges National Park is situated in the south-western area of the country (see Map below). Two of the main features of the Park are the spectacular gorges (the gorges reach a depth of over 600m in places) and unique biodiversity.. The park is being managed for the conservation of endangered birds and plants. The gorges are critically important habitat for intensively managed endangered birds several of which are being intensively managed. In addition the NPCS has established “Conservation Management Areas” (CMAs), plots in which invasive plants are weeded. These are essential for preserving endangered plant species and as habitat for native animals.
